Oakham High Street Crossing Incident White VW Found Abandoned.

A traffic incident occurred early Saturday morning on Oakham High Street when a white Volkswagen vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing light. The impact caused significant damage to the signal, leaving the crossing partially functional and potentially hazardous to pedestrians.

The white VW involved in the incident was later found abandoned in the Westgate Car Park, a considerable distance from the scene of the collision. Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the driver's whereabouts.

Rutland County Council's highways department swiftly responded to the incident, ensuring the area was made safe for pedestrians and motorists. The National Grid was also called in to conduct a safety inspection of the power supply.

As a result of the damage, pedestrians and motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution when approaching or using the crossing for most of the day. One particular concern was the remaining signal light, which was automatically changing colours without interruption. This led to a situation where some motorists failed to notice the red light on the opposite side of the road, potentially endangering pedestrians attempting to cross.

Contractors from Leicestershire were brought in to address the issue, turning off the lights and making the damaged signal safe.
