Rutland County Councils Leader Gale Waller says Rutland Will Explore All Options Amidst Local Government Reorganisation

Rutland Explores All Options Amidst Local Government Reorganisation

Following a morning announcement that the "North, City, South" proposals for local government reorganisation won't be altered to include changes to the Leicester City boundary before the government's November deadline, Rutland County Council Leader, Gale Waller, has issued a statement providing more details on the situation.

A Tale of Two Unitaries

Councillor Gale Waller explained that Rutland continues to contribute to the "North, City, South" proposal, a plan that arose from the government's request for councils in LeicesterLeicestershire, and Rutland to collaborate on reorganisation. However, the council has serious concerns about Leicester City's proposal for an expanded city boundary and a second unitary authority that would encompass the remaining Leicestershire districts and Rutland.

Gale Waller stressed that new unitary boundaries should be determined by evidence, not ambition. She emphasised the importance of a data-driven approach, suggesting that decisions should be based on what's best for all residents, not just one area's goals.

Exploring a Lincolnshire Merger

It's also crucial to remember that Rutland is part of another proposal, one that could merge it with several district councils in South Lincolnshire. Gale Waller confirmed that Rutland is still actively supporting the development of this alternative proposal, providing data, evidence, and financial modeling.

This move highlights Rutland's commitment to exploring all potential pathways and not limiting its options to a single proposal. It shows the council is keeping an open mind to ensure the best possible outcome for its residents.

A Vote on the Horizon

To ensure all options are fully explored before a final decision is made, dates for Rutland's governance meetings have already been added to its forward plan. A Full Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 20th. At this meeting, councillors will debate and take an indicative, non-binding vote on the draft final proposal for Local Government Reorganisation.

This meeting marks a crucial step in the decision-making process, allowing for a comprehensive discussion and a clear indication of the council's preferred direction before any final commitments are made. It reflects a transparent and democratic approach to a complex issue with long-term consequences for the community.
