Rutland Fights for its Identity: Over 7,000 Signatures Demand Ceremonial County Status Be Preserved, Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Stamford, delivered a petition to Parliament.

Rutland Fights for its Identity: Over 7,000 Signatures Demand Ceremonial County Status Be Preserved

A powerful message echoed through the halls of Parliament , as Alicia Kearns, MP for Rutland and Stamford, delivered a petition bearing over 7,000 signatures. The plea? To safeguard Rutland's cherished ceremonial county status, a status under threat due to unintended consequences of local government reorganisation.

Alicia, a vocal advocate for her constituents, highlighted the deep-rooted historical significance of Rutland, a county recorded in the Domesday Book and home to a Lord Lieutenant since 1559. She emphasized the strong connection Rutland holds with the monarchy, symbolised by the statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II in Oakham, a poignant tribute erected shortly after her passing.

"Rutland is a proud and ancient county," Alicia stated, "However, without legislative changes to the Lieutenancies Act 1997, Rutland will lose our ceremonial county status. Now I do not believe the government intended to put our ceremonial county status at risk, but the consequences of their reforms to local government have done exactly that. No other counties are in this position."

The crux of the issue lies in the potential impact of local government reorganisation and devolution, which, without specific legislative amendments, could strip Rutland of its ceremonial recognition. This prospect has ignited a passionate response from the local community.

The sheer volume of signatures on the petition underscores the depth of feeling in Rutland. With 7,141 residents signing in just six weeks, representing over 17% of the population, it stands as a testament to the community's unwavering commitment to preserving its identity. Alicia noted that this is "one of the biggest yet petitions delivered to Parliament in the 21st century," highlighting the extraordinary level of engagement from a relatively small population.

Alicia eloquently articulated the community's desire, invoking Rutland's motto, "multum in parvo," meaning "much in little." She explained, "We are asking for just a little, which would mean so very much to us."

The petition formally requests the House of Commons to "urge the government to take into account the concerns of the petitioners and protect Rutland’s status as a ceremonial county regardless of the outcome of local government reorganisation and devolution. Addition. Protection of ceremonial County of Rutland."

The fate of Rutland's ceremonial county status now rests in the hands of Parliament. The resounding voice of its residents, amplified by Alicia Kearns's determined advocacy, has undeniably placed the issue firmly on the national agenda. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the government will heed the call and amend the legislation to safeguard Rutland's historical and cultural identity.

Rutland Welcomes New High Sheriff, Colonel Richard Chesterfield

Oakham Castle witnessed a historic transition on Thursday as Colonel Richard Chesterfield officially assumed the role of High Sheriff of Rutland, succeeding Richard Cole. The ceremony marked the beginning of a year of service for Colonel Chesterfield, a distinguished retired British Army officer with a remarkable career.

Richard Chesterfield, 65, brings a wealth of experience to the prestigious position. His military background is extensive, having served in the Royal Tank Regiment, where he operated formidable Chieftain and Challenger tanks. His career also included a significant three-year tenure at the British Embassy in Washington D.C., followed by his appointment as the senior British liaison officer to the US Army in Europe. Prior to his retirement, he served as the station commandant of Kendrew Barracks in Cottesmore, solidifying his deep connection to the Rutland community.

Colonel Chesterfield, who resides in Whissendine with his American wife, expressed his commitment to serving the county. The High Sheriff role, rooted in centuries of tradition, involves supporting the judiciary, law enforcement, and voluntary organisations within Rutland.

The ceremony at Oakham Castle, a historic landmark, underscored the significance of the office and its connection to the county's heritage. The new High Sheriff's appointment is anticipated to bring a blend of military discipline, international experience, and a strong community focus to the role.

As Colonel Chesterfield embarks on his year of service, Rutland looks forward to his contributions in upholding the traditions of the High Sheriff and supporting the county's diverse needs. His extensive background and dedication to public service promise a productive and impactful tenure.

Brightside: Reviving the Joy of Roadside Dining in Rutland

Brightside: Reviving the Joy of Roadside Dining in Rutland

Inspired by nostalgic childhood road trips where a stop at a roadside restaurant was a highlight, Brightside is bringing a fresh perspective to roadside dining. This burgeoning chain, spearheaded by Loungers Co-founder and Chairman Alex Reilley, aims to recapture the simple pleasures of those journeys with a focus on freshly cooked, comforting food and genuine hospitality.

Reilley's own fond memories of Little Chef and Happy Eater during family trips from Leicester to Suffolk ignited the spark for Brightside. He recalls those stops as his early introduction to hospitality, unknowingly planting a seed for his future career.  The closure of such establishments left a void, and Reilley saw an opportunity to reimagine the roadside dining experience for the 21st century.

Drawing upon the expertise of their successful Lounge Café Bars and Cosy Club brands, Reilley and his team embarked on creating a concept that could thrive in a unique roadside environment.  The challenge, he noted, was different from the high street, requiring a strong and recognisable brand presence to capture the attention of passing travellers.

Brightside's journey began in February 2023 with the opening of their first restaurant on the A38 near Exeter.  The concept quickly gained traction, leading to the launch of Brightside Saltash in June 2023 and Brightside Honiton later that summer. Now, Brightside has arrived in Rutland, breathing new life into the well-known Ram Jam site, located beside the A1 and accessed by the B668.

The menu at Brightside is designed to appeal to a broad range of travellers. Diners can expect classic, comforting dishes, perfect for a mid-journey refuel. From tasty brunch options to satisfying burgers and proper pizzas, there's something for everyone.  Brightside also caters to families with plenty for little ones, and thoughtfully includes vegan and gluten-free choices, ensuring no one is left out.

Today, Oakham and Rutland News paid a visit to the new Ram Jam Restaurant in Rutland to experience Brightside firsthand. Our findings were overwhelmingly positive. The staff were friendly and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The service was efficient, and the food delivered on its promise of being good and satisfying.  Cleanliness was also a priority, with the restaurant and even the gents' toilets being well-maintained.  Our only minor observation was the absence of dessert pancakes, a small detail in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

The Restaurant is also dog friendly.
