Oakham is preparing for a celebration of life and a continuation of unwavering dedication to charity, as "Lorna's Legacy Presents A Rutland Variety Performance" takes center stage on July 23rd at Oakham School. This event, held in memory of Lorna Grey, who passed away in April 2024 at the age of 71, promises an evening of entertainment and fundraising, reflecting the spirit of a woman who dedicated her life to helping others.

Lorna Grey was a well-known and deeply respected figure in Oakham, a lifelong fundraiser whose impact resonated throughout the community. From her extensive volunteer work with the Lions Club of Rutland to her crucial role in running local vaccination clinics during the pandemic, Lorna's commitment was undeniable. She also served as a town councillor and shared her passion for education as a teacher at Stamford Endowed Schools and Vale of Catmose College.

Her passing has left a void, but her family, husband Allan and daughters Hanna and Lucy, along with the wider community, are determined to ensure her legacy lives on through "Lorna's Legacy." Their first initiative, the variety performance, will raise funds for Supershoes, a charity close to Lorna's heart. Supershoes empowers children in the UK battling cancer by providing them with custom-designed shoes, created by volunteer artists, to inspire them to embrace their inner strength.

The event promises a vibrant evening, featuring a diverse line-up of local talent, including musicians, dancers, and comedians. Local businesses have already stepped forward to pledge their support, demonstrating the widespread admiration for Lorna and her work. The night will be hosted by Rob Persani from Rutland and Stamford Sound.

Allan Grey, secretary of the Lions Club of Rutland, shared, "Lorna's was a life of helping others. She had managed type 1 diabetes and its complications from the age of 11 and suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2004, yet she still went on to jump 632ft off the Sky Tower in New Zealand, abseil off the Orbit at London's Olympic Park and tackle the world's fastest zipwire in North Wales, all to support charities. She was a committed volunteer for good causes and she continued this until the weeks before she died."

He added, "Lorna was an inspiration to so many people. As a family, supported by our friends, we feel compelled to honour Lorna's Legacy. We are starting with a variety performance to help Supershoes, a charity which she held dearly."

The event promises to be a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman, a testament to her unwavering dedication to her community and the causes she championed. As Oakham prepares to come together, "Lorna's Legacy" will not only raise vital funds for Supershoes but also serve as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact one person can have on the lives of others.
